For believers in Jesus, God's discipline is NOT punishment. All of God's punishment for humanity's sin was absorbed by Jesus' suffering and death on the cross, and Christ's sacrifice satisfied God's perfect justice — and by believing in Jesus, despite our sin we will stand before the Lord as spotless and white as snow. There is no more punishment for Christians.

    Why look back when Jesus gives us so much good instead? The fact is, all of us have wounds in our lives of one kind or another that must be addressed. Maybe our parents — also imperfect and wounded themselves — behaved in hurtful ways toward us. Maybe our own rebelliousness got us into trouble. Maybe we got married to someone who turned out to be "not as advertised." The list is long, and wounds are sadly plentiful.

    But God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds (Psalm 147) — a biblical promise we should memorize!
