Then he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel saying, ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts.

Zechariah 4:6 (NASB)

Zerubbabel, who lead Jewish exiles back to Judah (Neh 7:6), was rebuilding God’s temple in Jerusalem. If observed with worldly eyes, he faced an impossible task. Where would he get the supplies? Where would he find the workers? How would he hold off all the enemies of Judah who wanted Jerusalem to remain in ruins? God could have told Zerubbabel to work harder, to put in overtime, to train, or make cunning alliances but instead God says “rely on Me”. Like Zerubbabel, we all face trials that force us to choose between our own strength and God’s perfect provision. When we are faced with this choice may we remember God’s words in Zechariah 4:6 and entrust the results of our works not to our own hands but to the power of the Holy Spirit.
