Call to Worship: Devotional (By Pastor Dan)

Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

John 3:3-6 (NASB)

Nicodemus is a Pharisee and ruler of the Jews. He sneaks out at night to meet Jesus and confess that Jesus is a teacher from God (John 3:1-2). Jesus counters this confession with one of the most significant truths we can hear. In essence Christ says “It is not enough to believe that God sent me, it is not enough to keep the law like a Pharisee, and even being a ruler of the Jews counts for nothing. Instead, you must be born again”, that is to be born of the Spirit. This remains true today, no amount of good works will earn God’s favor and no amount of human reason will unravel the Spiritual mysteries of life. Therefore, may we follow the Spirit and not grieve Him (Eph 4:30), may we listen to His convictions concerning sin, righteousness and judgement (John 16:8), and may we pray for the understanding of God and the life that comes only through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, our Helper (John 16:7).
